Windows ME Setup Instructions

WINDOWS ME SETUP INSTRUCTIONS -- Note Windows ME is insecure and should not be used on the internet`

Windows ME needs to know what sort of modem you have, to do this go into Start->Settings->Control Panel->Modems.
If your modem already appears here, skip on to step 2.
If your modem is not listed, you need to add it, so click on the Add button.
Let Windows ME search for your modem.
If Windows ME identifies your modem with the correct brand-name and model, accept this and then you can then skip to step 2.
If Windows ME reports that it found a "standard modem", it is best to override this. If you have a 33.6K modem then choose "Standard 33600 bps modem" or if you have one of the newer 56K modems, choose the best match for your modem - this will usually be a "Standard 56000 v90 modem". These standard modem drivers are generic setup files that will work fairly well with most models.
To test you have all the settings right, click on the diagnostics tab and then click on the COM port that you modem is associated with, then click on More Info button. Windows will then talk to your modem and tell you if it finds any problems.

Check that Dial Up Networking software is installed. To check double-click on the My Computer icon, then click on Control Panel and look for a yellow folder called Dial Up Networking. If you see this icon, you can proceed to the TCP/IP INSTALL section below.
To add Dial Up Networking :
- Choose Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Windows Setup.
- Double click on Communications
- Check the box for Dial Up Networking.
- If you are prompted for the Windows ME CD, please insert it so that the needed files may be copied.
- Then click OK, and then OK again, restart your computer when prompted for the changes to take effect.

DoubleClick on My Computer
DoubleClick on Control Panel
DoubleClick on Dial Up Networking
DoubleClick on Make new connection (or you may be put in a new connection "dialog" automatically)
Change "My Connection" to "Blacksburg.Net", Choose your modem from the list, then choose next
Click on Finish.
Right-click on the Blacksburg.Net icon and choose "create shortcut", then click "yes" to create a shortcut on the desktop

Go to My Computer -> Dialup Networking, Right Click on the Blacksburg.Net icon, and choose properties
For maximum reliability, we suggest you uncheck the "use country code and area code" box if checked
Click on the Configure button
Set the connect speed to 115200
Click on OK to return to the properties screen
Click on the Networking button.
In Advanced Options make sure the none of the box's are checked
In Allowed Network Protocols make sure the only box you have checked is TCP/IP
Press OK
Close the Dial Up Networking window

Choose Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network.
On most computers the screen will look like this :

If your computer matches this, then your configuration is correct so skip onwards to step 7 below.
We need to remove any unnecessary network drivers.
If you have any other green colored adaptors listed ,other than the dial-up adaptor, you will need to call us at this point for further instructions. If the dialup adapter is not present you will need to go back to step 3.

Remove any of the following if they exist and your computer is not part of a home or business netowrk:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Client for Netware Networks
- NetBEUI
- IPX/SPX compatible protocol
- File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks
- File and print sharing for Netware Networks
Now check to see if the TCP/IP network component is installed. If not, click on the Add button, then select Protocol and hit the Add button. Select Microsoft under the Manufacturers heading and TCP/IP under the Network Protocols: heading, and then click OK.
Your screen should now match up with the picture shown in step 5.
Click OK to finish this part of the configuration. Reboot your machine if prompted

Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
Doubleclick on the Internet Options icon
Click on the General tab
In the Address box enter the following site: http://www.blacksburg.net/
Click on the Connections tab
Look in the "Dial-up settings" section for the Blacksburg.Net connection that you created earlier. Click on it once to highlight it.
Choose "Always dial my default connection"
Click the button "Set Default" if other icons are present.
Check the "Perform security system check before dialling" box.
Click on the Settings box. Put your username and password in the appropriate boxes in the Dial Up Settings section.
Leave the domain box blank.
Click OK, then OK again
Close the Control Panel

If on your desktop you have an icon called "Connect to the Internet" then perform the following steps :
- Double click on the "Connect to the Internet" icon
- Choose the option "My computer is already setup for the Internet" and then click Next
- The "Connect to the Internet" icon will be replaced with 2 icons - "Internet Explorer" and "Outlook Express".

Double Click on your "Blacksburg.Net" icon on the desktop
Enter your username and password
Click on connect
If all goes well, after a few seconds you will receive a message stating you are connected.
You can now start up any of your Internet applications. eg. Internet Explorer can be started by clicking on the Internet explorer icon on the desktop
