Wake up Giles and Montgomery Counties!
AEP wants to put a giant power line right here!
- This electricity is not for us - it is for sales to other power companies east of here.
- The power line needs a 200 foot right-of-way. It has towers that average 140 feet high and can be seen for miles.
- AEP wants to run it just north of route 460, right beside every town in Giles county and in plain sight of everyone traveling on 460.
- If AEP takes your land, you only get paid for the right-of-way, not for lost value to the rest of your property. Realtors estimate properties with a power line are worth only half what that same property is worth without a power line. Many property owners in the proposed corridors have been unable to sell their land at all.
- AEP sprays herbicides from helicopters to keep the line clear - and the spray lands on anything nearby including streams, crops and people.
- Several medical studies indicate a link between power lines and cancer.
- AEP "coal by wire" policy hurts our economy. Our region already imports over $250 million in electrical energy per year, costing local jobs. The proposed power line would make this energy imbalance worse, and will directly lead to the closing of the Glen Lyn power plant.
Can we stop it?? YES!!
Craig County stopped it. AEP is desperately seeking a new place to put their power line, and they are aiming squarely at Giles and Montgomery Counties. AEP needs a community that won't object as loudly and effectively as Craig County has done. AEP's challenge to you is to prove that you care as much about your county as the people of Craig care about theirs.
